Potter Spotlight: Meredith Host

January 16, 2020 by Steven Cheek

She received her BFA in Ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA in Ceramics from the Ohio State University. Meredith has been an artist in residence at multiple venues including the School of American Crafts at RIT, Watershed School of Ceramic Arts where she was the Salad Days Resident in 2005 and Dresdner Porzellan Manufactory in Dresden, Germany.

In 2011, Host was named as an Emerging Artist by both Ceramics Monthly and NCECA (National Council on the Education of the Ceramic Arts). Her work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibits throughout the country. Meredith is a core member of the Kansas City Urban Potters and teaches workshops around the country. She splits her studio time between her professional studio practice and her commercial line called foldedpigs.

A self proclaimed horror dork and root beer connoisseur, Meredith is inspired by pop culture and the ubiquitous patterns of modern life. Her work draws from the everyday patterns that are all around us, omnipresent, yet largely overlooked like the quilting on toilet paper or dimpling of a paper towel. These patterns are reimaged and presented in a new contextual framing as bold colored patterns layered across the surface of Host’s forms. This use of multiple layers, contrasting colors and patterns that are both unique and somehow familiar combine to create a body of work that is full of energy, quirky and playful.

Her work feels simultaneously contemporary and retro, using clean line forms that emphasize their utility. Seen alone or in groupings Meredith’s work is striking in its bold use of pattern and layers, providing multiple places for your eye to investigate. Her use of unembellished forms provides a wonderful canvas on which she is able to explore and play with the interrelationship of pattern and line, shape and color.  Meredith has taken the concept of “more is more” and found the right amount of exuberant adornmentation.
