Potter Spotlight: Andrew McIntyre

February 20, 2020 by Amy Chase

Andrew received his BFA in Ceramics from the University of Mississippi and his MFA in Ceramics from Syracuse University. He completed artist in residency programs at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China and at Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry, India. He was selected as an Emerging Artist by Ceramics Monthly magazine in 2018. He is currently the Studio Technican and Instructor in Ceramics at the University of Mississippi.

Inspired by a tradition of southern culture that he witnessed growing up in Jackson, MS, Andrew’s work reflects the relationships and community that are formed around the dinner table. The use and sharing of his work is at the forefront of his interest in creating utilitarian vessels. His desire is to nourish the home, table and lives of those that have his work. It is through the intimacy of use that each piece grows and enhances that experience of the user creating a dialogue between the user and the maker.

Andrew’s work is exquisite in its simplicity, clean forms provide the canvas for his mark making. Strong vertical lines paired with other decorative elements are enhanced by his use of glaze and slips. By firing his work in a wood kiln where soda is introduced at the end stage of the firing, a layer of glassy juiciness is added to his finished pieces. In his recent work he has begun to add other non ceramic elements to his work. The use of high fire Nichrome wire in place of a traditional knob on certain jars provides an additional opportunity to add line work and movement as well as removing some of the visual heaviness of a large knob on top of a jar. In other pieces, McIntyre has added a wooden inset into some of the bases or pedestals of his forms. This mixed medium approach offers a contrasting visual and textural element to his work. By featuring trays and stands in many of his groupings, he is able to start a conversation about the relationship between individual pieces as well as providing a non-verbal instruction to the viewer/user on how to interact or use each piece.
